No experience to offer and I haven't looked into this for awhile, but here goes...The 496/8.1 are supposed to be real good motors. Friend of mine has Crusader 496s in a new boat and put 330+ hours on them this year with no problems. They are thirsty. When I looked, I liked the Crusaders better than the Mercs., although I have 1978 Merc. 454s and they still run great. Your repower guy or whoever is selling you the motors should be able to figure your trans./shaft size out for you.
Are you sure you can get "new" (not reman'd) left and right 454s as complete packages from Crusader? I was told that they weren't available.
Take a look at the new Crusader small block (6.0?), its the engine used by GM in the smaller Hummer and alot of their trucks. Also supposed to be a real good motor.
Another option would be to get a good used pair of gassers and run them until you can get diesels. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
