It sounds to me like you're fixin to make a swim platform. It's been a while since I put mine on but off the top of my head I would say 4". Lay a staight edge across the back of the transom near the waterline and even up the gap at the two ends, thats your number. Getting the angle off the transom for the supports so the platform is level was the tricky part.
