No such thing as a newbe qestion here. We were all newbies once. The Cummins 6BT 210 is probably the most reliable 6B ever made. It is a true 10,000 hour engine if not overheated badly at some point, then it's just a head gasket issue. Rather than spend a lot of money getting the engines surveyed, do some simple tests: First, will it turn up over 2600 RPM at WOT and full load? Full load means running the boat with some folks on board. If so, good. Second, after it warms up to about 180 under load, does it quit smoking? If so, good. They all smoke blue when cold. And they all put out a little black haze at cruise, say 2400 rpm, just normal. And yes, when going from slow rpm to cruise, they all put out a real healthy black puff, totally normal. Oil pressure warmed up should be about 40# at cruise, drops to 10# at idle hot. Normal, but until you know it's normal, scares the crap outta you. These are low oil pressure engines.
Now, if it passes all the above tests, don't bother with the oil analysis, just a waste of time. If they run, pump a lot of water, smoke quits at crusie when warmed up, then they are probably fine.
The low hp 6B's are about as bulletproof as you will get. Other questions I cannot offer much help, other than to remind you that a Hyena Boat is a Hyena Boat.
