Scott's got it. All autopilots need a fluxgate/electric compass that is supposed to be mounted as low as possible. The Raymarine units also offer a gyroscope and AST circuitry which makes the computer "learn" your boats handling habits- this is the extra $500. I needed the fluxgate compass for the "moving target tracking " to work on my 1999 vintage R41xx 48 mile radar. Charlie J.-I'm still the v-berth guy. John F. gets the dinette, new comer's the engine boxes.
I'm off to buy the ST8001 without the "g" on the end. Thanks for the feed back. Hello winter boat show's, Baltimore this week, Atlantic City,Nj. first week of Feb. It snowed here in Annapolis again today- enough already !
