Doug, I have the 8001 and think the extra $100 for the knob over the buttons is worth it, as for the gyro, I didn't get it and really don't know what it would add, the boat tracks well and is easy to use. It follows a compass heading true and runs a route from my Garmin 2010 with little or no error, a nice set-up for around $1100 total.
