Before you get all warm and fuzzy with the posts on the high hours people are talking about, there are some very important things you need to notice in the posts. The really high hours are all reported in commercial boats, that do a lot of running.
A non commercial user will not get that kind of life because the engine sits more, and diesels do not like that. Low annual usage on a diesel is not what you want. I have 210's, 250's, and 300's, and I have had failures in all, with a cummins mechanic maintaining them(he does everything on the motors), and typically it always happens after we fire them up after sitting through the summer months. I am in a foreign country where I can get a certified mechanic out for $100 for a day, so I do that, and frequently.
You also need to be very aware of operating temps with these motors. It goes from fine to very bad quickly with faily small pieces of impellar in the tranny cooler. Do this a couple of times, and you will kill a motor, even if it is not hot enough to come apart initially.
The other important factor in engine life is not necessary hours, but how the engine is being run during those hours. At trolling speeds for the bulk of the hours, or idle, you get incredible life. If you are running a boat at high cruise for 30-50% of the hours, you will see a lot less life.
I would agree with the post that 370's are done at 3500 hours, I have seen this twice. 300's I have seen in recreational use get about 5000, and 210's will go 10,000 all with normal maintenance, and a typical 1 hour run to the fish. This does get much better depending on how the engines are run.
Another point I would make is that recreational guys will run the boat at max rpm's to get that additional 3 knts, and do it for hours. Diesels dont last long that way. Commercials guys or guys that are on the water every day typically do not do this. We run ours with a max rpm of 2400 on all the engines regardless of hp.
