Ok CMP bring on the wise cracks...
My brandy new Yannies have 120 hours, and run like tops!!! They will last forever, or until they break, whichever comes first.
Steve Miller runs the same engines as I do, and is a charter boat. This past summer, he put on about 450 hours, and last year he put on over 600. No problems. Think about it. That is 1050-1100 hours in two years. That is confidence inspiring unless you are some northern MA crackpot Volvo fanatic!
Most people I tell that I picked the Yanmars get a look of longing on their face and then tell stories of endless hours on yacht club launches, which are frequently stopped and restarted, and are abused by the dock boys. And the WAFI's (Wind Assisted F*&^$*g Idiot)who have them in the floating boats with a stick out the top who abuse engines because they don't know any better. Even they like them! Then the sportfishing guys who have huge boats and follow up the conversation with the inevitable "You have a Bertram 31, that is a great boat!!! Yanmars? Awesome choice!" response.
Cummins are great engines, and will last a long time. Actually I would be more worried about an engine (gas or diesel) that had really low hours, but was also really old.
