High hr 6bt

A buddy of mine is looking at a B31 with Cummins 6bt 250hp (1988 vintage) with 3000hrs on them. Looks like 200hrs per season and very detailed service records indicate good care (75hr oil changes, etc.). He feels there should be 1500hrs of service left in these motors before any major work would be needed. I would not be as optimistic. Any opinions or real life experience on this. Thanks for your help.
