One mistake I made -- I had my engines out for 6 months during my restoration, and although I did pretty much the same as described above, I didn't fair the area and I regret that now.

My engine compartments are nice and shiney white, but they are bumpy and a pain to keep clean as dirt does get stuck. If I had to do it over again, I would spend the time fairing everything as smooth as can be before painting.

Just my humble opinion.
