Sealing existing backer plates with epoxy

I've got wood backing plates on some of my seacocks that are kind of soft on their exposed surfaces in the bilge. I can remove a small amount of wood with a wire brush, which before that can be dug at with fingernails. I know I need to replace them all fairly soon but am not ready for that project just yet. Anyway, I was thinking about epoxy-coating them using this same method to possibly extend their useful life a while longer.
Think that is a good idea, or better to let them rot untouched so I'll know when their toast? I'm afraid I'll end up with a nice-looking skin of epoxy on top of a rotting/rotten backer plate, that would defy inspection until it fails.
Also thought about mixing up an anti-rot potion (read about this) of ethelyne glycol and borax, and just soaking the suckers in it regularly.
Opinions solicited...
