Rick and John,
If you live in NC and own a boat registered or kept in NC, property taxes are due in the county in which it is registered, stored or berthed. The county tax offices hire people to visit marinas on Jaunuary 1st and make a record of boats that are berthed there on that day. The tax law refers to property owned and located in NC as of January 1st. The tax notice you got is probably the listing form; and if you have previously listed the boat in another county (like where you live instead of where the boat is kept), then you can mark that on the form. Some people arrange to have their boat "in transit" on January 1st of each year to avoid the tax man, but this only works if the boat is federally documented and NOT registered with the state. Once you list with the appropriate county, they will continue to send you a listing notice the first month of the year until you sign it and mark "boat sold". Then they ask "to whom and where" in hopes of keeping the next guy on the tax rolls. They go to some standard guide like NADA to determine value. I doubt that your marina "volunteered" the info to the tax office. The long arms of the hated tax-man......
