Being blessed with opportunity over the years in viewing and participating in "boating" I continue to wonder at the "business". Whether it's Top Hull Speed, stablity, etc., companies rarely test, but modify, experiment, or discontinue [which is the old "the ruin of good is better"]. Most of the time let unaware buyers be the tester, yet advertise as though a million units have been sold. Unlike aviation, which has Federal watchdogs in aircraft mfg., Many boat mfg.use visual appearence to design and sell[women hold the final say on a majority of sales with interiors especially important]. I marvel at people who spend as much money as they do to buy something they know so little about. Maybe a clue for why some companys don't pay attention to the "marine" part of boats. Several years back I worked for a Hatteras Dealership and several of us measured the weight of a 55" Ocean[sales competitor] against the weight of a 46' Hatteras [the same weight], therefore they cost the same /pound[in a sense to make] and a lot of people want that 9 more feet to display, at the dock, although with an Ocean 9' does't do much for you 50 miles offshore. I know another large boat mfg. co. that is buying Cummins 6b eng.s for their triple cabin model. The boat was CAD designed with a small safety margin for glass/resin layup[CAD program is base on perfect glass layup conditions] after having alignment problems it was found that the stringers were not strong enough to keep the engines aligned. All this makes the 31' even "more special".
