A dumb guys opinion

I have read Capt. Patrick state that the 31's hull speed is about 35 knots, I think he basis that on the fact that with inboard power the hull noses down much above that. What if a 31 had outboard or I/O power, would it still be a 35 knot hull? I have been in a Gambler bass boat @ 75 m.p.h. and not much was in the water except the motor, I can't see the hull has much stress in flat water, but in rough conditions it would be a different story. I have to believe a person would have to set the parameters of the whole boat, inboard, outboard, sterndrive, or even the new volvo drive and define the water conditions to make a real hull speed evaluation. The bottom line as I see it, a planing hull is on top of the water, if the structure is strong enough and you keep the hull attitude right, friction, flight or a cap on power are the only things that will stop you from accelerating. I know this doesn't address your question at all, but I don't thing it's as simlpe as hull speed alone, except in a displacement hull.
