Yea well, we went to NY and I saw Mike's set-up with the zinc fish and all . Nice. I figure, that's for me , because the Venice Marina just hums with stray electricity all the time, I swear I can see the water pipes vibrating with all the charter guys and their deck-hands doing jury-rigging with new boat/old boats and all, a busy place all the time. So I buy a zinc fish just like Mike's, drop it overboard, one week later I go to the boat, check it - its gone- eaten right off . SS cable just ended, eroded off. UV says the charter fishing machine next to me sucked it up in his wheels pulling in/out of the slip. You know, a 3 pound zinc fish. I say maybe but then I figure a "defective " zinc fish. Go back to West Marine, they give me new one. I drop it overboard again but this time tied with a nylon line and sure enough the electricity eminating throughout the Marina ate up (cut) the SS cable to the zinc fish again right at the fish's mouth ,but this time my nylon line caught the fish so I still had it.
So I put a galvanic isolator on the boat and then re-secured the zinc fish with a solid copper 1/4" thick wire and all has been fine since. Not much erosion of zinc. I still don't know if the galvanic isolator solved the problem or if the zinc is OK w/the thick wire and not the SS cable.
Of course, staying at UV's Camp since the hurricane sure has cut down on the stray electricity, so I have been very happy.
