Jim, stainless is not a good material for fuel tanks, not so much that the welds will eat up, but it's just too brittle. Monel is the top material for metal tanks, then aluminum is good too, but stainless is not the way to go. Vibration will crack it.
Bertram developed the ifrst fiberglass fuel tank using fire retardant resin back in the early 60's, and no tank ever built - from any material - to this day will stay with it. Mine on AJ is over 33 years old and holds that 222 gal. usable diesel like it is child's play. Those thinking about removing the original FG tank need to take a second look.
