Bill-Bertram built a 20' center console (called the Sportsman) with a single I/O Mercruiser, the last of which was in 1969. There were only 98 of them built, and they're a very special boat that still commands a good price. Unless your neighbor's boat is missmeasured and/or missdated, I'd suspect it may not be a stock Bertram. The B-20's console is very far astern and has a pretty high plexi windshield. There should also be a chrome-plated "Bertram 20"on both sides at the stern in the same style as on your 31. The original Mercruiser was a straight 6 160 hp with an Alpha one drive, although many owners have updated them with V-4's. I think The Sportsman's fuel tank held 36 gallons in case you're carefully inspecting the boat. Don't know where you'd look for the Bertram hull# plate. I also have a 1969 B-20 Bahia Mar and on mine, the plate is below the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel. Walter
