Walt,

Acetone will work, but denatured alcohol is more compatable chemistry... The less thinner yields more epoxy since the thinner flashes off in the cure. What you want is a fluid about the viscosity of half/half cream for coffee. All you're trying to accomplish is to get a firm lock of epoxy into the grain of the wood, acting as a tie coat for the full strength epoxy.
