UV,

I like Charlie Haws used the West System 105 resin with the 207 hardener. The finish is relatively nuetral in color (clear). I applied 2 coats of West, and then followed with 2 -3 coats of Epiphanes varnish. The West can be applied with any good synthetic brush but as "Da Judge" says, use a good badger brush for the varnish.

The West System comes with metering pumps which make the mixing ratio foolproof. I beleive it is something like a 3 to 1 ratio and is automatically achieved by using 1 pump of resin for 1 pump of hardener. My batches were usually 2 pumps of each or 3 pumps each depending on how fast or how much I was able to work. Usable pot life is about 23 minutes. However the bigger the batch the shorter the pot life. Also I used the epoxy straight, without thinning and had no problems, once I got the knack.

With the first coat of epoxy I used a 250 grit wet sandpaper, went to 400 for the second coat. With the varnish I used 800 grit between coats (very lightly). Many people told me my finished work looked almost professional.....now if I can do that.....anyone can, this was my first attempt with both epoxy and varnish.

The West System also puts out a product guide, can be picked up virtually wherever West System is sold, gives product usage and recommendations to acheive good results. One tip that stood out was to wipe down the bare teak with acetone prior to applying the first coat of epoxy. It seems the acetone helps to lift out some amount of natural teak oil from the uppermost layer of the teak and allows for the epoxy to get a better bite on the teak. Let the acetone evaporate thoroughly (about 15-20 minutes) before you apply the first coat of epoxy.
