My knowledge of diesel engines is certainly limited, but that's why I asked the question.
Tom, is not a salesman, he installs and services engines. He says they make next to nothing on the engines anyway. He certainly has no finacial motivation to sell me an engine that's only $1100 more, even if he made 20% that's only $400 on an $60K repower job.
The 300Hp QSB is a 2600 rpm engine and the 380 Hp QSB is a 3000rpm engine, so I think you end up with a similar prop size with either engine.
Wheather it's is true or not, he says it's a old wives tale that engines need to be run 200 off the pins and that they can run 1800-2200 forever as long as the boat is propped right at 50 rpms over max at a full load.
The only good reason not to put the 380's in the boat seems to be the shaft angle and nose diving effect that Capt Pat mentioned.
Again, my diesel experience is certainly limited and I value everyone's opinion on this board, but I just thought I would pass along another point of view from a very reputable Cummins dealer that I had not considered before. There is a 92% chance that I go with the 300's anyway.
