Just my view. Your thinking about "over power", 380 vs 300, and the reasons are sound, but are inline with thinking gas. One wants to run a diesel at approx. 10% off wot[or what ever the mfg suggests], as often as possible, they are made to do that. With too much HP you would find less time to run that way. Diesels don't work as well at partial throttle as gas motors do. I have 2000, 270hp, and one of several reasons I chose that model was also because they are inter-cooled with engine water, not salt water[which can create it's own problems]. To achieve more hp Cummins had top go to raw water for lower temp/more fuel/power. and for a couple thousand dollars more and the another salt water heat exchanger it wasn,t worth it to me.[I don't know if the 300's are slt water inter cooled] but my guess is they would give you a new insight into power.
