Jerry, UV hit the nail squarly on the head. My Garmin GPS always shows true. The deviation is the kicker. That's the difference in the angle between magnetic north and compass north. This is why you never put ferrous metal or electric wires near the compass. So after installation you have to "swing" the compass.
