"Boxing" the compass using the GPS should work fine. But you have to figure out if the GPS is reading true or magnetic - if the manual does not say, I'd assume it's true. Then get a chart and read the true vs. magnetic deviation for your location and add or subtract from GPS true to get magnetic and set the compass to that.
