Diesels seem to make a difference. I had major performance differences when I had gas engines (Chrysler 440's). If I had a crew of 6 on board, my fuel consumption and speed varied greatly from when 2 0r 3 of us went out to fish. After installing my Cummins it's the same no matter what the load. I think you might find the same if you have a tower. You probably will rock more when drifting though.
