Having a raft and/or survival suits is a good idea. Those are the things that will keep you alive. Once you're still alive, the next trick is to be found. The ditch bag should be outfitted with things that will bring your ass to someone's attention. There are lots of things which take up very little space but can make a huge difference in being spotted during the day, or during the night.
Daytime signals:
mirror
dye bomb
smoke bomb
3' X 50' orange streamer
large white balloonsNighttime signals:
red cyalume sticks
flares
strobe lightOther items to bring:
waterproof hand held vhf and gps
small medical kit with seasickness pills
roll-up splint
ace bandage
white cyalume sticks (for light)
9mm glock (for unruly critters and/or crew)A note on being seen at night.... Flares are for signaling boats, not aircraft. If the Coasties are out looking for you in a chopper, they are probably wearing night vision goggles. A flare will blind them. Night vision goggles cast a green haze on everything and make green cyalumes invisible. Red cyalumes can be seen for miles.
If I had to choose the two most important items, they would be the white balloons and the red cyalumes. They're cheap, they don't need batteries, and they're the most visible from the air in day or night. More is better.
