Mike - got just the ticket for your buddy. I have macular degeneration (mild case) so I'm always looking for stuff I can see. Went to the FLL show year before last with one thing in mind - to find a chart plotter I can see. The Garmin 2010C color unit is head and shoulders above the rest. You can adjust the size of the numbers and the brightness of the screen is amazing - you can really see it in direct sunlight. 10" screen and so simple to use the manual is sort of unnecessary. I got the sounder black box for it (extra $225) and used a hockey puck shoot-thru-the hull 'ducer and it works great. All sorts of split screen options. They quit making the 2010C and now have the 3010C which has video and radar capability. I see new 2010C's on ebay going for about 1600 w/o the sounder module.

I have mine mounted right in front of the wheel on the f.b. and it is like a heads-up display on a plane. With the unit set on "course up", what you see on the chart is what you see over the bow. One of my favorite features is the giant red arrow that points to the next waypoint - all you got to do is point the bow where the arrow points and you are there. Also displays critical info to the right of the arrow in huge numbers, like croos track error, speed, distance to waypoint, depth and course to waypoint. In fact, there are about 40 things you can display in any order. As you can tell, I love mine, and have one little chip with every chart from Brownsville TX to Key West in a seamless display down to a couple of feet.
