Herman-

A lot of us have gone the gas to diesel route. We went from 454's, 20knt cruise and 170 gallons for a 11 hr canyon trip to 300hp Cummins. Now we cruise 26.5knts, 105-110 gallons and stay out there for longer. Can't describe the difference, it's absolutely amazing. We yanked the engines, cleaned up the wiring and shipped the boat to NC for the install. Looking back, if you've got the time you could do it yourself. A lot of good choices in engine variations (Yanmar/Cummins) and places to do the work.

Good luck.
