JK:

Last year i thought about changing my old flax stuffing boxes over to dripless - wound up not haveing time to fool around with it...but did come aqccross a pretty good idea that wouod help if you had to come home on one engine. If you put a t in each hose that runs from your engine (some convenient spot to pullo seawater from - usually gear cooloer) then tie both sides into each other, you'll always have water getting to your stuffing boxes as long an either engine is running. I think Strong Seals actually put 2 nipples on each unit to make this even easier, but would be simple enough to do this to any unit. Looked like a simple idea that woulod eliminate the need to tie off a shaft. But to answer your question of how to tie off the shaft....last time this happens to me i took a rag, wrapped it around the shaft, then clamped a vice grip on it.

Doesn't it seem odd that we can put a man on the moon, but in all these years of marine deisel design, our $25,000 engines are at the mercy of a $30 piece of flexible rubber...gotta be a better way
