Last summer on a Friday late afternoon we call it a day and pack it up. Just about to get up on plane and port engine begins to overheat. Stumped about what to do with the dripless shafts we tied up the port shaft and slowly made our way home. GPS read ETA of 359am for the inlet. Since it was flat calm we started looking for possible solutions. Turns out the keyway wiggled aft and came out. With only about 1/3 of the keyway remaining we put it back in and were on our way. Next morning at 4am port engine begins to overheat. Pull the pump to find the sherwood impeller absolutely destroyed. Only then did it make sense to look everywhere for the pieces. It was everywhere, in the pump housing, raw water intake side you name it and pieces of the impeller were there.
Needless to say we carry a lot of spare impellers onboard now, will change them every 100hrs or so and look forward to Tony Athens coming up with a better impeller.
A few questions...so what do you do if you have to limp home on one engine when you have dripless shafts? I could hear the tension when we tied off the shaft. Aare there any other options??
FYI- Just got our 2 pumps back from Tony and they look brand new. The guy really is great to deal with.
