Ken,

Almost all of the manufacturers can provide you with a stand alone unit. It simply would entail not adding the rest of the systems (GPS, Depth, etc.). In otherwords, don't buy the add ons, and don't connect the wires if you buy the package to gain a price advantage. I am with you on stand alone advantages. I love my radar, and don't want to mess with it by cluttering the screen.

As for power, I recommend at least 4kw. It will provide your range, clarity and power to penetrate rain and fog. The last two are perhaps the most important!

I prefer Raymarine, but believe Furuno, Northstar and Simrad all make excellent units as well. Sitex appears to have been well spanked in the marketplace. I could be really wrong, but that is the way it appears at this point to me.

There are people on the board or who own 31's who are dealers, so when you bore in on what you want, post it up, and you may get some help.
