Are my stock shafts too small?

I have a 1978 28 Bertram with stock 1 1/8" shafts. I have broken my port side 2 years ago and my starboard side last summer. Both times they broke next to the coupler. Is this a sign of too much engine power, electrolysis or what?

My zincs are burning but I don't want to experience this ever again. Any ideas?

My engines are 5.7 Vortec Indmars.
