This reminds me of a little episode this past summer on my B31. We were downhill from San Clemente Is. almost to the Mexican border trolling for albacore (about 80 miles from home). My port shift lever had been sticking but I figured it would be OK until I got home. That was when it became stuck in forward and I had to force it back to neutral. So, I took apart the shifter in 4 foot seas without reading glasses, not fun. I got rid of that little ball thing, cleaned up the guts, and mashed it back together. It was about as much fun as fixing a bilge pump switch upside down in rough seas.
