Went to the Coast Guard License renewal office in NY. The room was completely empty except for a counter, on the other side of which were some desks with women working behind them. No one looked up. I waited, coughed, made some miscellaneous shuffling sounds until someone said "take a number". I looked around and sure enough, on the counter was one of those bakery number machines. I pushed the lever and a bell rang and out popped a ticket that said "#64".
No one even looked up. I waited, coughed and suffled my papers, and nothing happened. I was the only person in the room.
About five minutes later, one of them got up, sauntered over to the counter, looked straight ahead and shouted to the otherwise empty room "Number 64!"
I was the only person there. It felt like a Saturday Night Live sketch. What the hell is happening to the mentality of the people working today? Scary.
