Paper is good, I always keep my key waypoints on paper in the log, both in L/L and TD's. The new Garmin stuff, like the 2010C (and maybe some others) no longer use a battery to store memory - it's all flash card memory now, so you never lose what's in there. In fact, the dirty little secret is that the huge advances in flash card memory over the last few years is going to totally change the landscape of marine electronics. I have a new 128 meg. flash card for my tiny digital camera that cost a staggering $20. And a Garmin Bluechart chip for the 2010C that has every nautical chart down to mere feet detail from Brownsville, TX to Key West that is the size of a razor blade. Times they are a-changing, but keep the old loran as a backup, cause if the GPS switch goes off, "go to basics - remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and don't put the pliers next to the compass" - the words of my flight instructor many years ago.
