The big argument has always been the need for some level of redundancy in case of a catostrophic failure. That's why the Loran system was not shut down as was originally scheduled a few years back.
Another thing no one seems to tell us when we buy our high priced instruments is that there IS an internal battery that needs to be changed every 5 years or so. My Northstar 952 color Plotter went into first-time startup mode one day 3 years after purchase. Didn't understand why and found out that my internal battery had prematurely died. The bad news is I lost all my waypoints and fish markings.
Paper record everything you put in as backup. Walter
