Jim, the diesel is all about torque in the power dept. Side bennies are safety, economy and long life. Weight is about the only drawback.
I had a B25 with 165 in line 6's and repowered it in 1984 with 110 hp Vulva diesel 4 bangers. Loved it and it caught marlin like crazy. Top speed went from mid-30's to about 24, but cruise was 22 at 7 or 8 gph and troll 7 kts at 1 gph. Doubled the range on the boat. I'm not a fan of the Vulvas due to complexity, high rpm and cost of parts, but the bottom line is you can swing a lot more wheel with the diesel torque.
My view is that putting a diesel in a B20 is for those with money to burn. Too heavy and there is limited room there. A rebuilt 250 c.i. Chevy like most came with, or another, and more modern option is the 3.0 4 banger Mercruiser with Alpha one that the discounters in FL still sell new with warranty for about 5K. At 135 hp it will push the little 20 just as good as the 160/165 and no problem getting a new engine. I paid half that for a 15 hp Honda outboard for the Goo Boat a few years ago.
Sorry to hear it's cold up there. It's a sunny 68.3 here, and I'm shivverin, in shorts, t-shirt (Newport one) and sandals.
