Bernie,
We're running CPL 0970s in our 31. Completed most of the upgrades that plagued the series during the repower project. The major one are the aftercoolers you mention in your post, 7mm vs 9mm injectors (the 7mm are better), M2 or newer cylinder heads, fuel return rail, and of course the newer generation pistons with teflon skirts are better. As you have probably heard, as long as you don't over-prop (over-torque) this series, you can get very good service. Make sure you can get rated RPM plus 10% to ensure correct propping.
The aftercooler upgrade should be no problem, a couple of hours per side, assuming you have the right brackets and air plumping pipes. Both sides of the aftercooler use rubber hose (use high-temp silicone hose). Use good hose clamps also, I like Breeze constant-torques. For some reason we have broken, twice, the cheap type hose clamps on the A/C inlet. Once during sea-trials and then another within 100 hours. Must be a vibration thing. System runs at about 25 psi so there is some pretty good pressure behind it. Remember to install new anodes in the A/C also, while you are there. I can't think of too many things worse than blowing water into the cylinders. Good luck.
