Bill,
Welcome aboard!
First, if the hull number you supplied is imprinted on the upper starboard transom, (BERG1828M80B/315-80), it's a 1980 year model...
BERG = Bertram Yachts
1828 = Hull number - 101, so Hull #1727
M80B = Month and Year code
31 = 31 ft
5 = Model (I think that 5 is the Sportfish. That right Tommy?)
80 = Year of manufacture - '79s manufactured in November or December are also classified as 80sIf your B31 is pre-'72, look for a piece of Bertram Letter Head laminated onto the inside of the hull on the port side under the V-Berth bunk. Most of the 60's models will this placement. The hull number will be marked in black Marksalot. Also look under the V-Berth headliner if the port bunk location has been removed or painted over.
Later '60s models & early '70s models may have the number on the inside of the transom, either below the deck level or behind the transom panel.
Check for a number written on the inside of the pilaster panels, not as accurate as the laminated paper with the Bertram Logo, but will place you within a 2 or 3 hull number range.
These early numbers will be 3 or 4 digits, the first number being the model number, the others will be the hull number minus 1. ie: 255 = Flybridge Cruiser, hull number 54.
Bertram, (depending on the year and who was in charge of numbering the hulls), changed their system of numbering several times and it's always been a confusing issue to decipher, and none of what I just stated is written in stone...
Best regards,
Patrick
