submerged engines

I seem to be getting a bunch of calls lately about submerged engines during the hurricanes.
All these engines were supposedly raised and then drained and filled with diesel and left to sit.

They are all anchors now.

This is the worst thing to do to an engine thats been under.

The engine needs to be raised of course as soon as possible.

Once raised it has to be started and run to burn off internal moisture. This will take some effort though. Don't wait for an insurance adjuster or your local bookie to give you the go ahead.

Once up, drain the oil and install fresh oil and filter.
You will most likley need new battery cables and a starter and a battery to start.
As long as the altenator if free, don't worry about that, its trash anyway.

Do not use the harnass to start. Most diesels need no 12v to run except those that have an electric fuel solenoid on the injection pump. These are internal to the pump and should not be affected by the water.

You will need a portable fuel supply also.

Get that engine running and bring up to temp.
Drain oil again and run for at least a couple of hours. Keep flushing oil and filter till it remains clear.

Wash outside of engine with fresh water to remove salt.

Don't forget to drain and change gear oil also.

If you don't follow the above steps, the engine will be trash as all these fellows have found out.

So if some old timer tells you to drain and fill with diesel, decline.
