Battery option

Maybe some others have tried this method. Some buddies told me to use two 27 series regular truck batteries wired in series instead of one 4 or 8 D series. One of the guys had I think 3 of the smaller batteries on each of his 671's. He did it because it was such a pain to try to get an 8D down in his engine room. One of my 4D's died last week, and I replaced it with two Wal Mart 850 crank amp, 700 amp cold crank batteries, wired together with 2/0 cable. They spun my Cummins faster than the 4D ever did, are ligher, cost $138 for the pair, versus $198 for the last 4D I bought, and I have 4 posts to wire things to. Tomorrow I'm going to replace the other 4D, which is 6 years old. Space is not a problem on my boat for the batteries - they are between the engines, but I hurt my back again putting that 4D on the dock, and I need to avoid that as much as I can. Also, the Wal Mart batteries have a 3 year free replacement warranty. I probably won't be buying batteries after this for some time!
