Picked AJ up this morning at the yard in N.O. and yep, the damn wind was blowing out of the NE in the dreaded Lake P that I had to do 26 miles in. Said screw it, was by my lonesome, headed out the canal and had a beam sea in the damn lake. We forget how beat up our props get just running them, you always hit some little something. Anyway, first thing I noticed going 1000 rpm down the canal was that the deck hatches were not rattling. Once out in the lake (it was cold, men, I mean cold for here, high 40's) I goosed her up to about 2000 rpm and got 20 kts, let her go for about 5 miles like that to check all the systems, then up to 2200, yeilded a nice 22 kts. Stayed there till I went under the hi rise on the causeway, then got more of a following sea, and we all know that that means. Open her up. 27.7 kts at 2650 and smooth as silk, then backed down to normal 2400 rpm and 25 kts. Sweet. Moving a lot of water in that quatering following sea, but like a train on tracks. Did not have to put any input into the autopilot for 15 miles on the last leg. Mr. Garmin said I would pass the green entrance marker right of it by 59 feet. He was right.
Wax and polish job the yard did on the Imron 5000 (now 3 years old) on AJ is spectacular - she looks like a showroom boat. Prop work by Jefferson is perfect, smooth, strong, and back to her usual 24.5-25 kt cruise.
A most pleasant couple of hours running a 33 year old boat a long way in some nasty stuff and having her perform perfectly.
