I would never replace a fiberglass tank that has lasted 35 years with an aluminum one that won't last 10-12 years. You'll need space around it so the salt and fresh water that gets into your bilge won't puddle about it and speed corrosion. If Diesel is in your future, your range will double.
Do it now and consider what you'll have to spend in fabrication, plumbing and carpentry as savings towards the cost of conversion. My 2 cents. I bit the bullet 10 years ago and have never regretted it for one minute. Walter
