Triton II is a NJ boat and is documented...has been since first purchased in '79. I kept it up when I took over as steward in '02. There was a fee to reassign the boat and its history to me. There are annual renewals, too. Just fill out the form and mail it in. Documentation requires that the boat name and hailing (home) port be placed on the transom with the lettering meeting certain size requirements.
The State of NJ requires that the boat be registered even though it is federally documented. They just wanted the sales tax and annual fee. Too bad that so little of these funds go back to boating. It is not necessary to place the state registration numbers or annual decal on the bow as on non-documented boats.
I carry the original of the in-effect documentation certificate and the state registration card on board while Triton II is in the water. That was helpful when we were boarded by the CG earlier this season. They were pleasant and did a good job with the along-side boat handling. Had to lower the bumpers down to my low freeboard! They were interested in "Safety, Signaling and Papers" only. I showed the documentation, PFD's, extinguishers, flares/flare gun kit/horns and they were satisfied.
We ended up talking about how a 25 year old boat design still looks better than too many brand new boats!
