In Response To: Bertram 20 Weight (Tommy)

I have owned two B20's and checked out a ton more. The scuppers are right where they always have been if they are just at the waterline at rest. Maybe that isn't where they SHOULD be, but that is where they sit.
My '66 Moppie, which has just found a brand new owner, has a comissioning plaque that stated its weight at 2800 lbs. It seems about right.
It was originally powered with the 160 straight 6, now it has a 4.3L V6. A tight squeeze in the engine box, but the boat handles the weight and power fine, and if you stay off the secondaries it doesn't burn too much fuel.
My family still keeps a '67 B20 Bahi Mar which was originaly powered with a small block V8. It has been repowered a couple of times since 1967, it now sports a 4.3L V6 fwc. Also a tight squeeze, but a nice fit in terms of power and weight for that boat.
Yes water gets into the foam in the boat. Here is a practical solution: Get a couple of round, threaded, water tight inspection ports from West or someplace, (look in the sailboat section if you dont find them right away). Cut them in and bed them as far aft and close to the center as you can; back behind the aft bulkhead, near the self-sinking scuppers. Scoop out the foam directly under them until you reach the fiberglass bottom. Now you have a couple of "sounding holes" where you can sponge out any water that gets in through the decks. It can take a while after a rain for the water to seep its way through the foam to your sounding holes, but it does eventually get there. Sometimes you have to go back an hour or two after sponging them out and repeat.
If I know we are to have a span of nice days I leave mine out (while the boat is at rest) to let everything dry out.
The first time through it took a couple of weeks to get everything truly dry, after that it got lot easier to keep up as long as I pop open the ports and sponge out the "sounding holes" after any serious rain. Generally I get about one big sponge worth of water, and after 24 hours of nice weather the foam is good and dry.
I was in the process of tracking down all the places the water might be getting in, but I hadn't yet managed to find them all. The new owner is aware, and he will have to pick up where I left off.
