Bob,
Clean & remove all oxides & scale. Wash with muriatic, (swimming pool), acid. Rinse the acid off well. Wash with denatured alcohol & apply a thin coat of epoxy. I mean really thin... Just brush it on and then wipe off the excess. Apply the first thin coat of Awlgrip between 6 - 8 hours after the epoxy goes on. Final application of Awlgrip 30 minutes later...
If the fitting is badly pitted, it can be sanded and more epoxy applied to fair out the surface, before the Awlgrip.
