Doc, what Vic said about not needing state registration if you are documented with the Coast Guard USED to be universally corret. Texas got around this somehow, and is now requiring dual registraion - state and Coast Guard documentation - on all documented vessels (with some exceptions for large commercial vessels). Now they charge us registration fees and sales tax. This just started this year, and they told us a lot of other states were doing it.
On documentation for charter, I changed mine from recreational to "Coastwise" for commercial use, running six pack charters, have obtained all federal fisheries permits like this, with no inspection. Inspections only needed if carrying more than 6 passengers for hire, according to local Coast Guard. If yours is documented, I'd try to keep it up.
