Capt. Mike -- while the compliment is appreciated, the Blackfin 29 hull is definitely not a dead ringer for a B31 hull. Not even close. The Blackfin is a built with draft angles in every direction that allow it to be pulled out of a one piece mold. That translates into boxier shapes. No two ways around it.
As a result, there are no sweet, sweeping curves where the beam is maximized at midship, Rybovich-like tumblehome and chines that protrude out like they should, etc. There you have it... there is no other small boat hull with the lines of a B31... coming from a secret admirer who just came out of the closet.
I was blocked up next to Hunter's 31 a couple years ago and we had this discussion time and again (while I waxed, and he overhauled, fought with his aluminum gunwales, rewired, added fuel tanks, etc).
The dramatic flare up front on the Blackfin hull makes the running bottom more narrow in the front half of the boat, vs. a full running body on the Bertram hull right to the bow. The Blackfin hull is not simply a splash of the B31 bottom with more flare added.
All that said, pretty does not make a perfect translation to functionality. The flare on my hull has a purpose, and does it well.
