neat trick

Been fooling most of the day with my new Goo Boat, rigging her out. She's a 16' aluminum bateau, a/k/a to non-coonasses as a jon boat. Wide, with a 48" bottom and 70" beam. Putting a 1/2" treated plywood floor in over the ribs. Rear panel was duck soup, since it's all flat, just cut, notch out for the ribs and drop in. The front panel was not so easy, since it curves up and narrows at the bow some. Cut it out, notched it, then was planning to screw it down into the ribs a little at a time with some #14 phillips flat head s.s. screws. Well, that treated plywood don't bend too good, so even with a 3/8 socket handle driving the #2 phillips, it wanted to strip the head. I remembered someone here recently saying that a paste of Comet applied to the head and the bit will give you a lot more 'bite' on the screw head, and damn if it don't work perfect. Can easily put three times the torque on the screw using the paste, guess the abrasive just grips the bit better. Gee, I wish this site was here 45 years ago.
My final secret weapon was having rather portly Snow stand on the sheet of plywood while I got the screws started.
Anyway, the new Goo Boat is shaping up - got the floor in, the heavy wire for the bow mounted trolling motor in, the new galvanized 8" cleats mounted on all 4 corners. Will probably go over to the camp on Friday and strip all the good stuff off the old Goo Boat, like the battery, fishing chair, depth finder and bring them home to install while she's sitting outside my shop on the trailer. Then all we have to do is drag the old Goo Boat up on my dock, take the 15 Honda off, put it on the new boat and good to go.
