Doc and Tom,
A Federally Documented vessel in NJ still has to be registered in the state of NJ. You have to pay your fee and put your yearly sticker on the window below the bridge. You do not have to put the NJ numbers on the bow as you NJ registration card will have the documentation number in it. You have to follow Federal Documentation regulations; by putting the name of the vessel and the hailing port on the transom. The name also has to meet Federal guidelines as to size of letters. You only have to put the name on the bow if your boat is a commercial vessel. When you document your boat you should be asked if the documentation is recreational or commercial.
Doc you should keep the doc number the boat has now. Your boat was a commerical boat so it may have been a commerical doc. boat. You can change that to recreational. Boat US can help with the process. I have done this three times in the state of NJ. They still get their registration fees; which were doubbled two years ago so "fag" would not be accused of raising taxes.
