Bob,

I went with an 1 1/2" bronze through hull fitting. It shouldn't have any kind of clam shell or other filter cover, so won't create any additional parasitic drag. I wouldn't want it above the water line. Besides, when you empty the holding tank under way at cruise speed, the added vacuum could be a plus...
