As usual, you are a great source of information. Regarding the 50-100 rpm over rated RPM with the Cummins 6BTAs to confirm correct propping, I've heard two things: 1) 50-100 rpm over the rated 2,800 as you stated or 2)10% more rpm's than rated, which to me means 2800 + 280 or 3,080.
I thought I remember a post by Tony Athens on his site a long time ago while we were in the early repower stages and rebuilding our two Cummins that it was 10% and thought he stated (memory ain't what it used to be) that any properly adjusted governor would allow the engines to easily reach the 10% over rpm to confirm proper propping(obviously one wouldn't want to run redlined very long). We have the CPL 0970s, fortunately with all upgrades made during the rebuilds to solve that series' specific problems. We are swinging 20x23, 4 blade props. We get 2900 rpm easily. But as you know, we want to make sure we aren't working those 0970s too hard. Your comments are much appreciated.
